For authors and self-publishers looking to improve their book and product page on Amazon KDP.
Your book isn't selling because your Amazon page is leaking buyers.
90% of self-published books sell fewer than 100 copies (Wordrated). Most authors blame discovery: a bad algorithm, a weak ad budget, the wrong launch week. The real problem usually sits one step earlier. The Amazon page does not convert the traffic it already gets. Running ads to a weak listing is pouring water into a cracked bucket.
Fix the page first. Then drive traffic to it.
The Five-Point Listing Fix
1. Title: earn the click.
Keep it between 60 and 80 characters. Put the main keyword at the very front of the string; Amazon weights it hardest for organic ranking. Make the subtitle do concrete work: curiosity, promise, specificity. "My Guide to Writing" ranks for nothing. "Writing a Fantasy Novel: The Complete World-Building Playbook" ranks for a lot.
2. Description: pitch, do not summarize.
You get 4,000 characters of prime real estate. Most authors waste half of it repeating the back cover. Use a proper sales structure: a one-line hook that names the reader's problem, the failure state ("most indie authors publish and hope"), the solution your book represents, a sliver of social proof (reviews, endorsements, numbers), and a closing line that tells the reader what to do. Short sentences. Bullet benefits. Amazon's algorithm reads every word for relevance; buyers scan for answers.
3. Keywords: the invisible 30 / 50 / 20.
Seven fields, and most authors fill them like a word cloud. Mix volumes instead: 30% high-volume terms (contested but visible), 50% mid-volume (winnable), 20% niche (yours to dominate). Front-load your strongest phrases in fields one through three. Multi-word phrases ("complete fantasy writing guide") beat single words ("fantasy") every time. Refresh every quarter and check whether you actually appear when you type them into Amazon.
4. Categories: two slots, two jobs.
Pick one category that describes the book exactly. Pick a second that is less contested, where you can realistically rank #1. A Best Seller banner does more for your conversion than any copy line you will ever write. Generic parent categories are a trap; "Literary Fiction" is a graveyard.
5. A+ Content: the lever almost no one pulls.
A+ Content adds around 20% to conversion on average (Amazon's own figure). It is free for KDP publishers, and a majority of self-publishers still do not use it. Build one banner image, three to four benefit blocks with icons, one endorsement or reader testimonial, a short author block, and a clear call to action. Images at 1200×800 minimum. Keep text per block under 100 words. Readers skim; they do not study.
The other half of the job: build the audience that points at it
A converting page only matters if someone lands on it. The second job: build the audience that gets them there. It's where every freedom-niche launch we've watched pull real numbers in the last year wins.
We recently covered five of those launches: Lyn Alden, Anil Patel, Michael R. Sullivan, Brian Hirschfield, and Max Hillebrand. Two patterns repeat across them.
Write in the open. Sullivan and Alden built their audiences by publishing the thinking that fed the book: long Substack essays, X threads working through arguments, podcast appearances that walked readers through the same territory the book would later expand. By the time the book existed, the audience was already inside the world. Launch day did not invent a reader; it converted one.
Stack the network at launch. Anil Patel's The Treasury of Michael Saylor hit #1 in Amazon Finance with 1,000+ downloads in the first 24 hours. His network did most of that job. Vijay Boyapati, Preston Pysh, Natalie Brunell, and Michael Saylor himself all touched the launch. The listing closed the readers they sent. Break either leg of that setup, and you get a good-looking launch with no sales.
A strong network pointing at a weak page wastes the network. A strong page sitting in front of nobody wastes the page.

@KDP_Pilot : for the audit and the ad math.
Runs a full diagnostic on your Amazon listing across title, description, keywords, categories, and A+ Content, and tells you exactly what is costing you rank and conversions. The feature we use most is the Amazon Ads profitability simulator: it calculates your target ACOS before you launch a campaign, so you know whether the numbers can work before you burn through the ad budget. We run it across our German, French, and Spanish catalogs. It pays for itself the first time it stops you running a campaign that was never going to return.

We run a Layer 1 marketing package for self-publishers that covers this exact punch-list: listing rewrite, keyword and category strategy, A+ Content build, native posts across our network, a newsletter feature, and three ARC reviews from our readers' groups.
Get your page right before you buy your first ad. Every dollar you spend on attention compounds on a listing that converts, and evaporates on one that does not.
